About

“Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul.” – Friedrich Froebel

Working with children is my passion. I believe children process through emotions and events differently, which results in a flexible approach to therapy being necessary to be as effective as possible. My goal as your child’s therapist is to help create a safe environment where a child can move through difficult experiences and emerge with new strength.

I have been working with children and families in the mental health field in the Cedar Rapids area for 10+ years, and my experiences with a variety of families from diverse cultures and walks of life add to the qualifications that make me effective in my therapeutic work with children. I earned my Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling Psychology from Loras College, and am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of Iowa (license #001556). I have experience providing mental health services in a variety of settings (inpatient, outpatient, and community).

I specialize in working with children from ages 3-18 who are experiencing anxiety, mood disorders, the impact of trauma, divorce, separation anxiety, school anxiety and other life transitions. I also have unique experiences and training that allow me to work with children with significant health barriers including cleft-lip and palate, diabetes, and birth defects. I am also able to integrate Christian-based counseling and guidance through prayer in my therapeutic work with children and families as desired. My training experience includes AutPlay (level-2 certification), Adlerian Play Therapy, and Certified Trauma Practitioner (CTP). I will work with your family to help find and focus your child’s strengths to assist in the development of their skills as we move through the therapeutic process together.

About

In our busy and sometimes stressful lives, self-care is imperative. Tending to our own mental health may become necessary if the struggle becomes overwhelming to manage alone. Once you’ve made the decision that therapy is the next step for you, finding the right neutral, compassionate, non-judgmental and empathetic therapist is of the utmost importance. My mission is to build a therapeutic alliance with you using a collaborative approach to reach your goals. The evidence-based approaches and interventions that I use are designed to assist you in further identifying and tapping into the strengths you already possess.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (2013), and I am currently working towards completing a doctoral degree in Couple and Family Therapy at University of Iowa. About

The side of you that people see is polished and put together, but you don’t always feel that way on the inside. Sometimes you worry about things you shouldn’t worry about, and sometimes that worry “takes over” and makes it hard for you to cope.  There are times when sadness and anxiety can become all consuming, and it’s just easier to shut down. My objective is to help you to recognize your strengths and the power you already have in a world where we are constantly confronted with negativity. I provide a safe and comfortable space to explore these issues and help you to resolve your inner struggles.

I have earned two Master’s degrees, one in Clinical Psychology and another in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling. My extensive education and training offers me the flexibility to adjust my style to accommodate your needs. I have experience with approaches from CBT, Person Centered therapy, Mindfulness, and Motivational Interviewing perspectives.

My specialty is working with adolescents ages 16 and up, and adults who are struggling with depression and anxiety. I have experience working with mood disorders, exposure to traumatic events, substance use, and people within the LGBTQ community.
