James Neubauer, tLMFT

What happens if you wake up one morning and don’t recognize the person lying in bed next to you? How do you handle it if you discover your teen acting in ways that you don’t recognize anymore? What if you want to work with someone who has experience with gender issues but don’t know who that would be? If you are someone looking for answers to the questions above, or who struggles with things like anxiety, nighttime restlessness and racing thoughts, depressive thoughts or feelings, or lacking the energy to do something you used to enjoy, I am the therapist for you.

I specialize in Internal Family Systems (IFS), which involves a process of experiencing your inner world. Internal Family Systems (IFS) takes the approach of examining our inner world and identifying its parts. “Parts” can be quickly understood as pieces of us that exist in our daily lives.  For example, a part of me wants toast, but another part of me is on a diet eliminating carbs. At times our parts can take on roles that get in the way of us being our full Self. Another example: one part of you wants to get better, but another part of you feels terrible. Through IFS, we work with both “parts” of you to resolve these concerns. I am actively participating in continuing education training for IFS, as it is a modality that I enjoy using with clients.

I consider you the expert on what is going on with you, including your feelings, worries, and concerns. In a collaborative and shared space, we can find new meaning in the problems you experience. I am skilled in the application of Narrative Therapy, and work to integrate strategies from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and healthy coping strategies to assist you in better management and alleviation of your symptoms. As we go through life, roadblocks and barriers to success are inevitable. My goal is to provide an open and accepting space where all people feel heard and accepted throughout the therapeutic experience. I offer a brave space for adults, teens, couples, and families from all backgrounds and populations seeking therapy, and am committed to acceptance and mutual respect.

I will work with you to identify therapeutic goals, and encourage therapy to be a collaborative process. I maintain a strengths-based approach, and my job is to work with you to navigate and solve problems that can sometimes feel difficult to manage. I am here as a facilitator for your sessions, but our sessions are yours to direct.

My clinical interests include working with individuals, teenagers, LGBTQ+, couples and partnerships. I am also skilled at working with clients who experience trauma, anxiety, gender dysphoria, and depression.
